Our Career Guidance Programme

CEIAG is now accessed in the PSHCE curriculum by both Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 pupils in the Spring Term, supported by Diane Wilkinson and Pete Tupman.  Primary students access Life Skills lessons.

We do this through a range of different deliveries which include:

• Visits to Careers Events like Skills North West at Event City in Manchester
• Work Experience

• Flexi work experience

• Access to an impartial Advisor
• Access to support from our Progression Officer

What is career guidance?

Career guidance is information provided by a Professional person about the world of work, choices about college courses, apprenticeships, traineeships and work based learning.

They also inform you about what training providers offer.

Where does it all begin?

At the BLC it begins in primary (lower school), where the students have ’Life Skills’ lessons.  Career Education, Information, Advice and Guidance is now part of PSHCE curriculum, which is accessed by all years 7 to 11 in the spring term and supported across all three sites by Diane Wilkinson and Pete Tupman.  Key Stage 3 pupils will access AQA Entry Level Unit Award and Key Stage 4 pupils will access AQA Level 1 Unit Award.

In years 10 and 11 all students’ and parents’ are invited to our in-house Careers Fair where all the local colleges, training providers and employers are able to discuss their courses and/or opportunities available to the students Post 16.

After the fair, our Careers Advisor will see all year 10 students and start to discuss and action what each individuals thoughts are and what they need to start doing to prepare for later choices and steps in year 11.

In year 11 all students are able to apply with our Careers Advisor to their chosen destination whether it is a college or a training provider, traineeship or apprenticeship and our Progression Officer will make arrangements to transport them to their interviews, make sure any support needs are put in place, transport them home and feed back to parents if required.

What do you need to do?

Students need to work hard in order to achieve any qualifications possible whether it is GCSE’s, Entry Levels or any of the BTEC Awards you can gain through our Vocational options/choices.

They all count when tutors, course leaders or employers want to see what transferable skills a young person has acquired during their school years.
