Intent for Maths

Brownhill Learning Community believes that the skills of numeracy and wider mathematical understanding are key life skills that all students need to develop, in order to understand the world in which we live.

We aim to provide a mathematics education that will enable our students to investigate, communicate and manipulate information in a powerful way that will aid the development of their logical and creative thinking.

We firmly believe that making mistakes is part of student learning and we celebrate these in class as ways of discovering and correcting misconceptions.

Our goal is to develop a nurturing environment which supports questioning and investigation across a range of mathematical experiences to enable students to develop a positive and confident attitude towards their mathematics

Comprising of two key stages, key stage 3 and key stage 4, the mathematics curriculum spans years 7 to 11.

Mathematics is taught to classes over three sites and externally through the Home Tuition Service.

Pupils from different year groups, abilities and sections of the BLC (Rochdale Pupil Referral Service and Brownhill Special School) combine.

Classes throughout Brownhill Learning Community are taught by 35 staff*, 17 teachers (including 3 specialists) and 18 teaching assistants.

Significant discrepancies between “age expected” levels and current attainment throughout the BLC demands a curriculum which ensures our pupils leave with mathematical functionality and qualifications to progress onto further education, training or employment.

From years 9 through to 11, expectation is that ALL pupils sit at least one nationally recognised qualification.

Qualifications have been selected to ensure every pupil at every level can achieve.
